A new breed of intelligent lockers, making a valuable contribution to business
How do they work?
Banks of lockers are controlled from a local PC or run centrally from a networked server environment. The user identifies him/herself by 4 digit PIN, card, fingerprint or facial recognition. The software checks the authenticity of the user and, if authorised, will permit the user to access the lockers. A specific locker door might open or, in a different operational mode, the user can select which locker they wish to open. The system then audits the user name and the locker opened, recording it against time and date in the database.
Who would use them?
For some this level of control is simply convenient and fast, for others it can be fundamental to everyday business activities. A wide range of commercial organisations use the lockers to manage a diverse range of items such as shared or pooled tools and specialist equipment, schools use them for housing laptops or mobile phones and hospitals use them for storing and controlling access to certain drugs.
Front panel managed
By taking away central management it is possible to offer a lower cost alternative, easy to install, simple to use and requiring little training; these lockers are used for shared portable equipment such as laptops or for storage of personal items and are popular in schools, universities, sports centres, hospitals and libraries. Options for granting access are the same as centrally managed solutions and security is just as robust.
Clever Technology
Charging
Lockers can be supplied with in-built charging capability if required, or if preferred, with a separate charging bank for batteries in a lower locker compartment.
RFID
RFID tagged devices can be managed and controlled as an individual entity. The central software is aware of when an RFID item is removed or returned. A pictorial view shows which devices are in or out. This level of control has multiple uses such as controlling access to devices that need calibration, or do not have sufficient charge. Items that have been damaged can be returned to the locker and a flag raised so that the system is aware and can n otify the administrator by SMS or simple on screen indication.
Modular systems
‘Typical sizes‘ are available but systems can be designed for specific customer requirements. A mix of locker compartment sizes within the same physical unit is possible, enabling each asset to be housed appropriately and allow different modes of access for different usages. As you can imagine, housing a workman’s power tool is different to a hospital endoscope or a childs laptop!
Don’t forget Digital Identity!
Pin, card, fingerprint of Facial Recognition can be used to capture the users Digital Identity and depending on software settings the user will gain access. In a well integrated system the same Digital Identity can be used to gain access to the building through Access controlled doors or register in the Time & Attendance or E-Registration systems. E-Lockers are as much a part of a fully integrated Identity management system as cashless catering, Reference Libraries, Door Access control systems, E-Registration and managed print solutions.
For the business, the integration of one system with another and the subsequent use of one Digital Identiy to use these systems, means that overall administration is significantly reduced; management information (eg SIMS), which contains lists of users along with their details, only needs to be imported once into the central database which can then feed out to all connected systems. This not only helps at first installation but continues to be of benefit as user information is changed or new users are added – these changes are made to the central database and then reflected in all connected systems.
